Protecting maritime heritage

The Shipping Museum has taken numerous actions to help protect our movable and immovable maritime heritage. One of the most significant involves the dredger Jaizkibel.

The intervention of the Shipping Museum prevented it from being scrapped in 1992. The museum subsequently worked with other organisations to have the dredger declared a cultural heritage object, with the status of a monument.

Restoration work was begun in 2010, and on its completion a ceremony to welcome the Jaizkibel back was held at the cradle in the dry-dock of the old Astilleros Ondartxo shipyard in Pasai San Pedro on 7 June 2012. The restoration was made possible by an agreement reached by the Port Authority of Pasaia, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Basque Government.
